Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's uncle, suspected of using ill-gotten gains to build a real estate empire in France, has been charged with corruption, an anti-graft group said Tuesday. Rifaat al-Assad, 78, who was Syria's vice president in the 1980s, was charged on June 9 with embezzlement and money-laundering, the Paris-based Sherpa group said in a statement.
